EXPOSITION of the Blessed Sacrament on Thursday 9-9.50am

PARISH CONSULTATION on placing of the benches. If we have enough volunteers after Mass on Sunday we will move the benches to the ‘Plan A’ design. Please stay to help if you can.

CONGRATULATIONS to Eric and Joyce Wharton who were received into full Communion with the Catholic Church on Saturday at St. Mary’s.

RELICS: Fr. Brown writes; I’ve been asked what the small objects between the candlesticks are. These are reliquaries.
I acquired a number of relics from the Vicariate at Rome (with
authentication) over the years. They are pieces of bone of St. Wilfred, St. Oswald, St. Thomas Becket, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Pius V and St. Therese of Lisieux although only frou are displayed at any one time. It is traditional to put out the relics on the altar on major feasts such as Pentecost and they give us a awareness of the
Saints joining our prayers around the throne of the Lamb as depicted in the Book of Revelation.

Una and the Humble family would like to publicly thank Fr. Brown and the parishioners of St. Mary’s for mass cards, cards and letters of sympathy and especially their prayers, support and love during Ernest’s illness and death and the wonderful attendance on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. God bless you all.
The fantastic sum of £500. was donated for DePaul Trust
North East.

CAFOD SPECIAL APPEAL FOR SYRIA 23/24th March. You
Will be aware that the crisis in Syria is having a devastating effect on the lives of millions of people, and that the humanitarian situation is getting worse by the day. According to the United Nations 2.5 million people in Syria are in urgent need of food aid, while thousands are fleeing into neighbouring countries every day. The scale of the crisis is overwhelming.
CAFOD is already supporting our Church partners in Syria, helping them to provide food, clothes and relief supplies to those most in need. The extensive community networks of the Church mean that it is uniquely placed to act: our partners are able to provide life-saving aid in some of the worst hit and most inaccessible areas of Syria.
Given the gravity of the situation and the urgent need to respond, the UK’s Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), of which
CAFOD is a member, has decided to launch a nationwide appeal from March 20. Please give generously.

SANCTUARY LIGHT: If you would like to have the sanctuary light burn for an intention for a week then this is still possible and the suggested donation is £5.

MASS & ABSTINENCE FOR OVER 70’s Fr. Brown has been asked recently about whether the obligation to attend Mass every Sunday and to observe days of fasting and abstinence apply to the over 70’s. The law on Sunday obligation is that all Catholics are obliged to attend a Sunday Mass (includes Saturday vigil) unless for a serious reason. Age in itself does not constitute a serious reason. As for fasting and abstinence,
Abstinence from meat is binding on all who have completed their fourteenth year (canon 1252). Fridays are always days of abstinence in England and Wales unless a major feast falls on a Friday. Fasting (which applies to only Ash Wednesday and Good Friday) ceases to be an obligation for those who have begun their sixtieth year.
